The Main Ingredient...Sneek Peek!
Today I thought it would be fun to post a little snippet of a scene from my work-in-progress. This is my first full length novel, and it's a standalone.
“Well yeah, these are definitely all wrong.” Lindsay stood in his kitchen, hands on her hips as she surveyed the cabinets.
Josh laughed. “So it’s not just me then. I was starting to think I was losing my mind.”
Lindsay swatted his shoulder. It was a playful move but his libido hadn’t quite settled down since the last time he’d seen her and a second’s worth of touch managed to make it roar back to life.
“No, I get it. I can see why you picked them, but they really don’t fit with what you were looking to do in here.”
“I’m at a loss. I spent so much time picking these out, and I was already behind schedule with this project.”
“I’m thinking you want something lighter. The space is too small for cabinets this dark. Maybe a blonde wood?” Her eyes lit up with excitement as she pulled out her phone and typed madly. “I saw these cabinets the other day and I completely forgot to mention them to you. They have these smoky glass doors. I know you might think they’re too modern for you but I bet they’d be a really sexy, fun addition in here.”
“Sexy and fun,” Josh repeated, watching her skirt sway with her movements.
Lindsay responded with a wide grin as she tilted her phone screen toward him. The photo showed a very modern kitchen, but he was surprised to find he actually liked the look of the glass cabinet doors. They were just smoked enough that you could only see the faint outlines of the dishware inside.
“They could really pull this whole project together. Have you considered a brighter pop of color for the rest of the kitchen? Like an orange maybe?”
“I have definitely not considered orange. But tell me what you have in mind.”
Lindsay spread her hands wide, motioning to the current counter tops and cabinets.
“Soapstone is super trendy right now for counter tops. It takes a little more upkeep, but the look is totally worth it. And it’s got these naturally darker bits that would make a color like orange look amazing for the cabinets.”
He mulled it over, still unconvinced but enjoying seeing how passionate Lindsay was about his project.
Up until then, he’d been working solo, and only when he had a chance between paying jobs. He’d enjoyed the work at first, but the further he got into the renovation, the more he’d been wanting another set of eyes on the place.
“I’d be a lot more willing to take the jump if I could see them in person,” he hedged. Josh didn’t want to tamper her excitement, but he also couldn’t afford to fork over more money for cabinets he wasn’t 100% sold on.
“Absolutely! And you’ll want to feel the soapstone in person anyway. It has this rugged, kind of rough feeling to it. When you rub your palm over it, well it gives me goosebumps every time.”
He saw her press her palm to her chest, perhaps unconsciously, and he felt his mouth begin to water. Josh had spent more than a few sleepless nights since their first meal together, thinking about holding her in his arms, running his fingers along her skin and making her moan against him.
She tilted her head and looked at him with a question in her eyes, before realizing what she was doing with her hand.
She stopped with a barely uttered, “oh”, dropping her hand to her side and blushing.
“Tell me more about the soapstone,” he murmured, his throat suddenly dry.
“It’s a pretty unique feeling. Like a scratchy kind of soapy feeling, that’s where it gets its name. A cat’s tongue is the closest thing I can compare it to, as crazy as that sounds.” She pulled his hand toward her, laid it on her chest where her hand had been. “Rough, but soft at the same time. You have to be gentle with it, take care of it.”
Josh nodded, taking in every word she uttered. He felt her hot skin against the palm of his hand, and the urge to flex his fingers, to push them under the thin strap of her tank top was overwhelming.
His resistance broke like a rush of water through a cracked dam, and before he knew what he was doing, she was in his arms. He kissed her and she kissed him back with a ferocity that overjoyed him. She was soft in his arms, just like he’d dreamed she would be.
That's all for now! Hope you enjoyed this little snippet from my work-in-progress novel!
